Client cases

Yacht investment by Norwegian investor emigrated to Switzerland

A Norwegian investor was looking to purchase a yacht following his emigration to Switzerland. The yacht was to be kept in Mediterranean and it was essential that his family would be able to make use of the yacht without becoming subject to the likely new Norwegian tax on corporate assets used for personal purposes.
The tax has yet to be voted but is likely to be introduced at some stage. Corporate ownership was therefore not the ideal in this situation and we recommended personal ownership with the management being outsourced to a management company.

The yacht would sail in EU waters but would leave EU at least once every 18 months to avoid paying EU VAT.

Offshore Trust

A client approached us for some planning prior to him and his family moving to United Kingdom. He was neither resident nor domiciled in the UK and wanted to benefit from the non-domiciled status. He already had substantial wealth and engagements in several successful companies. The non-Uk assets were placed in an offshore trust and income and capital gains from these investments would thereby not be subject to UK taxes.

Please note: Following the suggested changes to the UK non-dom regime this client case will be revisited and our recommendation summarized here shortly.

Private Trust Company (PTC)

A client had settled an offshore trust but wanted to avoid the costly and time consuming procedures needed when a change of Trustee was required. We suggested that a Private Trust Company replace the current corporate trustee. This would enable the client and his family to be part of the Board of Directors (but ensuring the trust remained controlled and managed offshore) . Changes in the management of the Trustee would simply require changes to the Board of Directors while the PTC itself remained as the sole Trustee of this Trust.

Real estate investment in the UK by professional footballer

A professional footballer was planning to move to the UK and play for one of the major Clubs. While in the UK he wanted to invest in real estate in a tax efficient manner. He expected his investments in the UK to be maintained even after his UK football carrier would end and he did not intend to remain in the UK after his engagement ended.
Our group established a property investment company.
